(AUSTRALIA) – Australian billionaire Tim Gurner has issued an apology following his controversial remarks suggesting an increase in unemployment to remind workers of their place.
Gurner, known for previous comments about young people’s spending habits, made the statement during a property summit, asserting that the COVID-19 pandemic had negatively impacted employee attitudes and productivity.
He proposed a 40-50% rise in Australia’s unemployment rate, equivalent to over 200,000 job losses, to counter perceived arrogance in the job market.

Gurner later expressed deep regret for his comments on LinkedIn, acknowledging their insensitivity to affected workers and their families.
His remarks ignited a global backlash and were criticized by Australian politicians from various parties.
US lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also weighed in on the issue, highlighting income inequality.
Despite some defenders, including Minerals Council of Australia chairman Andrew Michelmore, many criticized Gurner for his remarks, considering them out of touch with the realities of job loss and economic hardship.
Gurner, with an estimated net worth of nearly A$929 million, is the CEO and founder of Gurner Group.
