(AUSTRALIA) – A planned strike at two major liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Australia, owned by Chevron, has been postponed as talks between the company and unions continue.
The strike, initially scheduled to begin on Thursday, was in protest of pay and conditions. Workers have now delayed their strike until 06:00 Perth time on Friday.
Australian LNG plants delay strike
The Gorgon and Wheatstone plants in Western Australia account for over 5% of global LNG capacity. Concerns about the stoppages have pushed up natural gas prices.
While the first round of stoppages is not expected to have a significant impact on gas supplies, the threat of rolling full stoppages from September 14 could potentially affect global energy markets.
In the unlikely event that the situation escalates to full stoppages, approximately 6% of global supply could be disrupted, leading to potential price spikes.
